Statement of MPD Sworn Member Passing

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) regrets to announce that 54 year-old Sergeant Mark Eckenrode, a 23-year veteran assigned to the Court Liaison Division, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2020 after suffering a medical emergency while on duty. Sergeant Eckenrode’s death was not COVID-19 related.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, friend and MPD member. We grieve with the officer’s family but also find strength knowing that he made a positive impact on others.” – Peter Newsham, Chief of Police.

Sergeant Eckenrode is survived by his wife and three children.
