Arrest Made in an Assault with a Intent to Kill and Assault on a Police Officer Offense: 5000 Block of Hayes Street, Northeast

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Arson Task Force announce an arrest has been made in reference to an Assault with a Intent to Kill and Assault on a Police Officer offense that occurred on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, in the 5000 block of Hayes Street, Northeast.

At approximately 5:51 pm, a member of the Metropolitan Police Department was entering an unmarked cruiser at the listed location. The suspect approached and threw an improvised incendiary device, commonly referred to as a Molotov cocktail. The Molotov cocktail struck the cruiser and landed on the ground. A brief foot pursuit ensued. The suspect was apprehended by responding officers. No injuries were reported.

On Wednesday, April 23, 2020, 26 year-old Ashton Nesmith, of Northeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Assault with Intent to Kill, Possession of a Molotov Cocktail with Intent to Use, and Assault on a Police Officer.
